It’s my house now spider bitch.

Taking over our new 200-year old Georgian gem and making it our own was bound to be an uphill battle. Old homes take extra work, not to mention the fact that this one was still furnished and had a lot of contents. Ugh… What we didn’t anticipate was that we were going to begin a war with the local insect population. The bugs are not the same as we’re used to in the western part of Canada so there has been a lot to learn!

The Spider Gang.

Cobwebs snacked us in the face at every turn and the corners held some of the most impressive webs I’ve ever seen. I was both grossed out and impressed. Thankfully, most of the spiders in Nova Scotia are pretty harmless to humans and the ones that aren’t typically don’t socialize. While I see the benefit of keeping a few house spiders around for pest control, I draw the line at having between two and five behind every picture, in every archway. It’s too many!

So, we started work on taking back the house. A good round of vacuuming is the best way we found to knock down webs and get things headed in the right direction. A good vacuum has extensions you can use to distance yourself from the spiders. Vacuuming the ceiling, walls, corners, and baseboards took down the majority of critters, but we knew there was more to come.

Our daughter moved one year ago to Montreal and gave us some solid advice in how to find a balance between spiders and the other bugs that like to pitch a tent in your house. The

It is a character-filled, 200-year old Georgian gem that’s tucked into the heart of a small, sea-side, Nova Scotia community. Cobwebs smacked us in the face around every turn and the corners held some of the most impressive natural structures we’ve ever seen (at least within the walls of our home). Disgusting. But hey, we asked for it right?
